Aswad Eggplant is a true giant that thrives even in short seasons! This robust Iraqi heirloom produces massive, shiny, scalloped deep purple eggplants with a distinctive squat teardrop shape. Despite their size, these beauties ripen reliably and continue producing abundantly once they start.
"Aswad" means “black” in Arabic and is the colloquial term for eggplant in its native Iraq. This variety is well-adapted to hot and dry conditions, showing exceptional heat and drought tolerance while still performing well in shorter growing seasons. With its dense, low-moisture flesh, Aswad is ideal for frying, roasting, or baking. It’s a fantastic choice for eggplant parmesan, grilling over open flames, or making rich, smoky baba ganoush.
Originally introduced to the U.S. in the 1990s by Iraqi seed saver Aziz Nael, this variety has been preserved by the Iraqi Seed Collective—an effort worth supporting!
Grow Aswad Eggplant for an extraordinary, high-yielding heirloom with unmatched size, resilience, and rich culinary versatility!
