Greeley Wondermelon (Canteloupe)

This large melon, the size of a watermelon, is truly remarkable. Originating in Greeley, Colorado around the turn of the century, it was introduced for purchase in 1915. The melon has a distinctive ribbed skin with a light netting and contains sweet, orange-colored flesh. If you happen to be in Greeley, be sure to stop by Monroe Family farm, who has been cultivating these melons since the 1930s. For those at high altitudes, take note - High Desert Seed+Gardens were able to successfully produce this melon at a remarkable 6300 ft, albeit towards the end of the growing season.
